Students that participate in the singing competition:

·       understand, interpret and produce language samples available within the lines of the lyrics of songs they perform.

·       gain knowledge and understanding of the perspectives of the culture studied.

·       understand the nature of language and concept of culture through comparisons of English and Turkish and American culture and Turkish culture.

·       use the target language outside the school setting for personal enjoyment and enrichment. They may also have the opportunity to participate in the international language Olympiad in Turkey.

Students that participate in the poem recitation:

·       understand, interpret and produce language within the verses of poems they recite.

·       gain knowledge and understanding of the perspectives of the target language culture.

·       use the target language outside the school setting for personal enjoyment and enrichment. They may also have the opportunity to participate in the international language Olympiad in Turkey.

Students that participate in the speech competition:

·       engage in oral exchanges of learned material to socialize, obtain and present information using familiar words, phrases, and sentences to listeners.

·       demonstrate an understanding of the cultural practices while preparing their speech around a given topic, dialogues and questions related to the target language and culture.

·       access the knowledge of other subject areas, especially social studies, while preparing their speech on a given topic.

·       demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language through a deeper study and comparisons of the student’s own language and the target language.

·       use the language both within and beyond the school setting through participating in this competition.

Through taking a language test that include listening, reading, culture, grammar and vocabulary sections, students:

·       engage in written exchanges of learned material to provide information and demonstrate understanding of simple, clearly spoken and written language

·       study Turkish culture to be better prepared for the culture section of the test.

·       demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of their own language and the target language.

5.     Folk Dance

Through preparing a presentation on American culture, students:

·       engage in oral exchanges of learned material to present  information on a specific topic such as a place in America, a famous American or American history.

·       access the knowledge of other subject areas while preparing their presentation including history.

·       demonstrate an understanding of the concept of culture  through comparisons of the student’s own culture  and the target language culture.

·       use the language both within and beyond the school setting through participating in this competition.

8.     Art
